Mishkat al Masabih Volume 1 - Motive

MOTIVE - MISHKAT AL MASABIH (Volume 1)

Omar bin Al-Khattab reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: Actions are judged by motives. There is surely for man what he intends. So whosoever’s hijrat is towards Allah and His Apostle, his jirat is towards Allah and His Apostle; and whosoever’s hijrat is towards the world which he seeks or towards a woman whom he intends to marry, his hijrat is towards that for which he makes hijrat (emigration). – Agreed

Abu Kabshah Al-Anmariy reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say: There are three things over which I take oath, and I am communicating to you a thing which you should remember. As for the things over which I take oath, these are – the wealth of a man does not diminish if given in charity; no man is oppressed with an oppression and then he keeps patience at it but Allah increases thereby his honour nor, a man does conquer the gate of a disputed land but Allah opens for him the gate of poverty. As for that which I am communicating to you – keep it in memory. Then he said: Certainly, this world is for four kinds of men – a man whom Allah has provided with wealth and knowledge, who fears hi Lord in respect thereof, and performs duties to his kinsmen and acts duly for Allah about it – this man has got the best of ranks; a man whom Allah has provided with knowledge but not provided wealth, but who is sincere in intention and says – Oh! Had I had wealth, I would have done the works of such and such an one – the rewards of both are equal; a man whom He has provided with wealth but not provided with knowledge, who rolls in wealth without knowledge, who does not fear his Lord therein, nor does he do his duty towards his kinsmen or acts justly towards his kinsmen or acts justly therewith – he is the worst in ranks; and a man whom He has not provided with wealth or knowledge and who says: Would that I had riches, I would surely have done the works of such and such an one and that is his intention – the rewards of both are equal. – Tirmizi (Authentic)

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: Verily Allah looks not to your figures, nor to your wealth, but He looks to your hearts and deeds. – Muslim

Anas bin Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said when he came out for the battle of Tabuk: Verily there are people at Medina – we have neither crossed any valley, nor treaded any hard soil to fall upon the unbelievers, nor incurred expense, nor were afflicted with injury – but they shared with us in that, while they were in Medina. They asked: Then how was that, O Messenger of Allah, when they were not with us? He said: Sufficient for them is the excuse. They became partners owing to pious intention. – Bukhari

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: Whoever intends to do a good action but does not do it, there is written for him a reward. – Agreed

Abdullah bin Amr reported that the Holy Prophet (saw) said: Whoever has got the world as his object, Allah keeps up his poverty before his eyes. – Ibn Majah

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: Verily people will be raised up according to their intentions. – Ibn Majah

Abu Bakrah reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: When two Muslims encounter with their swords, then the killer and the killed are both in the Fire. I asked: O Messenger of Allah! This is (about) the murderer, but why is it so with regard to one murdered? He said: Because he was greatly desirous of killing his companion. – Agreed

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: Whoever marries a woman for a dower with the intention of not paying it back, is a fornicator: and whoever takes a loan with the intention of not returning it, is a thief. – Ibn Majah
